Brewed under heavy pressure, espresso has visible layers with the darkest, strongest part of the brew on the bottom and the thick crema, made from the oils and fat of the coffee beans, resting on top. You can dollop heated milk on top and, depending on its texture, turn the espresso into latte, cappuccino, macchiato and many other delectable concoctions.
